Police has issued a statement on the temporarily arrest and release of FDC candidate, Kizza Besigye.
Patrick Onyango, Spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan Police, says Besigye was trespassing on a police facility and will be sued.
Here is the police statement:
Today Thursday 18th February, 2016 at 6.00pm, Dr. Kizza Besigye together with Hon. Elias Lukwago stormed one of Uganda Police Force security premises and assaulted a police officer occasioning grievous harm on him.
This was under a false allegation that the Uganda Police Force was rigging and tallying votes in favour of the National Resistance Movement party at the Naguru based installation.
The logic here does not add up by any reason.
Security premises can only be accessed, following approval from the Inspector General of Police and not in any random manner or time as pleases the person accessing the premises.
He came with a team of journalists with cameras and a rowdy crowd which act is considered breach of security at the facility.
Even in the event of personal or private property, no one has the mandate to inspect – as it amounts to criminal trespass unless authorized by a competent authority provided for by the law.
Accordingly, Dr. Kizza Besigye was apprehended for criminal trespass and assault and later released on police bond.
He, was later escorted by the police to his home in Kasangati.
Further investigations into this incident are ongoing. We urge all leaders and their supporters including candidates to adhere to the laws as expected of responsible citizens.
Generally, we would like to applaud the public for their exemplary behaviour so far on the polling day.
