In the latest case of the hunter becoming the hunted, police in Uganda has arrested one of its own for allegedly tampering with exhibits in connection with a botched gold deal.
According to the police spokesperson, Andrew Kaweesi, the suspect identified as Wilber Wanyama, a senior police officer in the Criminal Investigations Department under Kampala Metropolitan North is being held at the Police’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Kireka, on suspicion of replacing genuine $11000 with fake ones.
“We have arrested our Kampala North region CID officer in connection to a gold deal and exchanging exhibit money with fake one,” Kaweesi said.
Kaweesi said the gold was stolen by bodabodas from a licensed mineral trader who reported the case at Old Kampala Police Station something that prompted the police to commission investigation into the matter.
He said the bodabodas had already sold the gold to three Pakistanis who have since been arrested.
This comes after UPDF suspended its Chief Political Commissar Col Felix Kulayigye for involving himself in a fake gold deal.
