Police on Wednesday beat to coma Davis Kamutima, a driver to Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)’s Chief Mobiliser Ingrid Turinawe while arresting them in Nakawa.
Also arrested was Mwesige Joram Kyenjojo, an activist, while leaving Nakawa court where Dr. Wrn Kizza-Besigye had appeared for the mention of his treason case.
The suspects are accused of defying police orders
FDC deputy secretary general Harold Kaija said Kamutima was arrested while driving Ingrid, he was beaten into coma.
“He is currently at Naguru hospital where he has been taken after we put pressure on police,” Kaija said.
He said the driver is in too much pain after police officers commanded by Siraj Bakaleke pounded him in the same incident where they beat up Daily Monitor photojournalists as they were covering the arrests.
After the beating of Abubaker Lubowa and Robert Lubowa, their fellow journalists marched to Jinja Road Police Station demonstrating against mistreatment from police.
Makerere LCV woman councillor Doreen Nyanjura visited Kamutima in the hospital.
“His legs are broken, he uses a wheel chair. He has a lot of pain in the chest and throat, he can at the moment only try to drink but he cannot eat,” Nyanjura said.
“We have tried to secure bond for him in vain! Even on his sick bed. They still torture him,” she added.
Nyanjura said attempts to secure bond for a bed-ridden Kamutima were futile after police declined to give him one.
Police has not spoken on the matter.
Meanwhile, Ingrid and other suspects are still detained at Jinja Road Police station.
It took a hot argument and alarm from Ingrid to have her driver carried to a waiting Police ambulance and taken to Naguru Hospital.
According to reports, with tears flooding her eyes and spilling down her cheeks, Ingrid refused to record a statement until police allowed a one Winnie Nakajubi to escort Kamutima to hospital.
