Police have arrested about 825 drivers on Kampala –Masaka highway in a space of two weeks in response to increasing accidents.
The traffic police, in partnership with Uganda National Roads Authority and Works and Transport Ministry launched an operation this month code named “Fika Salaama” (arrive safely).
The operation is aimed at promoting safety on the road and reminding road users of their obligation towards observing the traffic and road safety guidelines.
Addressing press at headquarters in Naguru on Monday, police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi says those arrested had no permits, were driving recklessly or had cars which were in a dangerous mechanical condition.
He said the operation was a test for the increased accidents on Masaka road.
Kaweesi said the operation will continue until the risk of accidents is reduced.
Dozens of people have lost their lives in Masaka accidents in just a space of two months.
