One person has been confirmed dead and scores injured as Christians flock Namugongo Martyrs Shrine to mark Martyrs Day.
The deceased in her 50s is said to have succumbed to high blood pressure brought about by the pushing and shoving at the crowded shrine.
Director of Fire and Rescue Department Joseph Mugisa, said the dead person, a Ugandan died upon arrival at Kiruddu Hospital.
He further said nearly 100 pilgrims who were critically ill due to exhaustion from walking long distances from various places to the Shrine were also taken to hospital.
However, most of those hospitalized are improving, according to Mugisa.
At least one million pilgrims have thronged the shrine to join celebrations are organised by the diocese of Kiyinda –Mityana under the theme; “The Truth Will Set You Free”.
These are drawn from within Uganda and other African countries including 4000 from Kenya, 4,500 from Tanzania, 300 from Burundi and 1,500 from Rwanda.
At the Catholics shrine the prayers have started and are being led by Bishop Joseph Anthony Zziwa of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese.
At the Anglican Shrine where the guest of honour is the Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, the prayers are being led by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Stanley Ntagali.
The main celebrant is Rt Rev Dr.Samuel Chkwudi Ezeofor from Nigeria.
