President Yoweri Museveni is currently meeting Burundi President, Pierre Nkurunziza, in the capital Bujumbura.
We have learnt that Burundi talks have finally started.
President Museveni is giving the opening and will be followed by the EAC Secretary General, Amb Richard Sezibera.
The meeting is being held at Hotel Belair Residence where other politicians and members of civil society groups have been waiting for hours for President Museveni to arrive.
Museveni has been sent by the East Africa Community to help mediate in the crisis sparked by President Nkurunziza’s third-term bid.
Also present alongside political, religious, women Leaders, is Agathon Rwasa, Burundi’s strongest opposition candidate who was earlier on “eager to know agenda of the dialogue” because he came with an open mind.
Earlier in the afternoon, Museveni was received by joyful Barundi in the northern Ngonzi town.
He was then accompanied by Burundi interior minister, Edward Nduwimana, to the capital.
The talks are expected to strike a compromise between the opposing camps so the July presidential elections can proceed without inhibitions.
