We are receiving reports indicating that police has deployed heavily and blocked Kizza Besigye’s supporters from attending his rally in Lira town.
Besigye who is currently campaigning for the position of FDC flag bearer with Mugisha Muntu, has been in northern Uganda canvassing for votes.
FDC Women League leader, Ingrid Turinawe, says police swung into action and blocked Besigye’s entourage in Lira Main Street.
“Police in Lira has formed long patrol lines along all the streets. They have mega phones and go making announcements,” Ingrid says.
She says the announcements were calling upon people to shun Besigye procession.
“All people are informed not to join Besigye in the precession. He is here for a meeting and a rally. Whoever joins a procession will be dealt with. He is supposed to move quietly and slowly from meeting to rally.”
As we have learnt, the police is led by the Regional Police Commander of North Kyoga region, Aruk Richard Maruk.
Maruk reportedly personally warned local residents not to attend gatherings addressed by Besigye and that if they did so, they would risk suffering grievous consequences.
Meanwhile, people disobeyed police orders and joined the procession that marched across town.
The police DPC, a one Tugume, is said to have later given up when crowds overpowered police.
