Police in Mbarara town reportedly served the whole stretch of the growing city with clouds of teargas and live bullets in an attempt to disperse FDC strongman, Kizza Besigye’s supporters.
A huge crowd of FDC supporters gathered outside Grand Holiday hotel Sunday while Besigye addressed Ankore FDC leaders inside.
In the meeting, the delegates from Mbarara sub region invented a new slogan “Kigwaleero” (it ends here and now).
As Besigye concluded his meeting, crowd of FDC supporters had already moved and blocked Mbarara-Kabale road, sealing of the town for themselves.
His supporters made a quick fundraising and contributed money for his fuel as he visits other areas in his campaigns for FDC presidential flag bearer.
Teargas and bullets
Meanwhile, as Besigye left Booma grounds, fans formed a procession to march with him through the town.
Police intercepted the motorcade and served crowds with live bullets and teargas.
Many were reportedly injured including police officers who were stoned by the crowd.
The hurt were admitted to nearest clinics.
Residents who could afford internet, took to social media to decry police action.
“Museveni must be worried over the way how Col. Besigye is organising rallies,” remarked the Mbarara FDC chairman, Robert Katembeya.
Besigye was accompanied by FDC diehards, Mulindwa Walid Lubega, Harold Kaija, Hon Ekanya, and iron lady, Ingrid Turinawe.
For the time being, regular police joined by military police took over the town and manned all the streets to restore order.
