The dispute between Dr. Olara Otunnu and Lira Municipality MP Jimmy Akena over the leadership of Uganda People’s Congress-UPC party has thrown members into confusion.
Both Otunnu and Akena claim to be the legitimate heads of UPC.
Dr. Olara Otunnu is yet to hand over the party leadership following the expiry of his term.
Akena was controversially sworn in as UPC party president by his supporters at a consultative meeting that was hastily constituted into a national council.
Akena’s group has since taken over the party headquarters at Uganda House.
The dispute between the duo has impacted negatively on the smooth running of UPC party activities.
On Monday, Otunnu unveiled the roadmap for the internal party elections ahead of the 2016 polls.
But Akena says they will follow the road map that was drawn by the National Electoral Commission.
Addressing the media at Speke Hotel on Monday, Otunnu said he is constrained to do his work because of the dispute.
Not long, Otunnu’s team demanded that Akena leaves the party headquarters so they can organise the delegates conference.
But Akena’s group responded with equal vigour saying Otunnu has no mandate to tell them what to do.
