The ruling NRM’s Central Executive Committee member, Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, has withdrawn from contesting for Vice Chairperson Western Uganda leaving Maj Gen Matayo Kyaligonza, unopposed.
Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, the minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, had also showed interest in the position of vice chairperson for western region while Kyaligonza fought over the seat with First son in-law, Odrek Rwabwogo.
The CEC started by rejecting Rwabwogo’s nomination yesterday.
The second top organ did not explain its decision.
With Rwabwogo out of the picture, the tension would remain between Otafiire and Kyaligonza, all UPDF chiefs at the rank of Major General.
In a turn of events, Otafiire announced he had pulled out of the race leaving Kyaligonza unopposed.
Kyaligonza, who is also an ambassador to Burundi, has held that office ever since it was invented.
As matters stand now, he is officially in charge of the same office for the 2016-2021 term.
CEC has recommended his name to the top most organ, National Executive Committee, sitting this afternoon at the Entebbe based State House.
