If jailed Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye is innocent, let him prove it in court, Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Maj. General Kahinda Otafire has said.
Dr Besigye, a four-time challenger of Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni is currently being held in Luzira Maximum Prison over treason charges.
In a televised interview on NBS TV’s Barometer, Maj. Otafiire said, “If Besigye is innocent, let him prove that in the courts of law. I would be concerned if Besigye had not been produced in court.”
His remarks come just hours after Nakawa Court Chief Magistrate James Ereemye said he would visit Dr Besigye in prison to assess the situation there.
This was after Dr Besigye told court that his rights are being abused by the prison authorities.
One example Dr Besigye gave was that has tried to send a Ramadhan Besigye to the Muslim community but it was blocked on grounds that he had no right to send any message.
Besigye also asked court to give a timeframe sitting which the state should conclude its investigations.
This was after prosecution told court that it was still making more inquiries into the allegations against Dr Besigye.
