An ugly episode was recorded at Pacific Summit Hotel in Kapchorwa on Monday evening when Go Forward and Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] party coordinators refused to defect to the ruling National Resistance Movement.
The opposition coordinators were paraded before the Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda,by NRM leaders in the area as defectors.
According to URN, they were invited by Ahamada Washaki, the NRM coordinator for the Elgon Zone, for a meeting with the prime Minister and National Resistance Movement party chairman, Al-Haji Moses Kigongo, to discuss issues affecting their region.
Washaki, who had spent a week in Sebei region, had also managed to convince Abdullah Singa and Joseph Kamuron, the Go Forward and FDC party coordinators in Sebei sub region to defect to NRM.
He also tasked the duo to convince their followers to defect and support, Yoweri Museveni, the NRM Presidential candidate in vain.
When he called upon them to hand over their party cards, the coordinators remained seated.
Bashir Chelimo, the coordinator Go-forward Youth in Sebei region, said the NRM leaders mobilized people in the region to attend the meeting with the prime minister over land issues.
“We were surprised that we from Opposition were being referred to as defectors. We want to denounce this in the strongest terms possible and we are still in our parties. We were duped,” Chelimo said.
The head of Go Forward in Kapchorwa sub-region and MP for Kween County, Kisos Chemaswet, said the NRM leaders wanted to create an impression that they had done effective mobilisation and the Opposition supporters were crossing to the NRM.
“These are the people who deceive President Museveni to give them money for such activities when there is nothing they are doing on the ground. The NRM supporters must learn to be faithful to President Museveni. The truth is that he has been deceived. He no longer has support of the people,” Chemaswet.
