Opondo revives Mbabazi Temangalo, Chogm sagas

After his announcement to stand in 2016 general elections, analysts started predicting the pending arrest of Amama Mbabazi.

In a social media message, Andrew Mwenda, journalist and political analyst had this to say: “For now I predict there will be criminal charges brought against Amama Mbabazi over Temangalo, oil bribes, chogm procurements etc.”

In his response to Amama’s declaration, government spokesperson reminded the public that Mbabazi had participated in Temangalo and Chogm corruption cases.

The Temangalo land issue came up back in late 2008 and early 2009 during a parliamentary probe into allegations that Mbabazi abused his office when he, together with his business partner, Amos Nzeyi, sold land to NSSF at Shs 11bn, the biggest chunk of which belonged to Nzeyi.

The majority report, chaired by Johnson Malinga (Independent), found Mbabazi and then finance minister Ezra Suruma guilty of breaching the leadership code, conflict of interest and influence peddling.

In 2010, Parliament’s CHOGM probe team summoned Mbabazi as Minister of Security to explain how $5m advanced to his ministry to cater for security issues during the CHOGM 2007 was spent.

The money was received from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology.

Parliament was inquiring how government officials spent over Shs 500bn in the run-up to CHOGM 2007 in Kampala.

Opondo has just hinted at these cases which analysts say could lead to Mbabazi’s arrest.

Here is Opondo’s statement:

Well he has been crawling with his announcement for the last two years.

The very fact that he was removed from those two positions in quick succession – Prime Minister and Secretary General.

He said he is loyal to the NRM – Kyankwanzi resolution.

He is the one in 2000 who told Kizza Besigye not to jump the queue.

Whoever is saying this is a surprise has not been here. I can tell the world categorically.

There is no secret Amama Mbabazi is holding in his armpit.

Amama Mbabazi will be judged by the different appointments Museveni gave him.

We have seen him on his Facebook profile trying to recreate himself.

He is not the only one who has sacrificed all of us have sacrificed.

Yes there is corruption and Amama Mbabazi is among those accused – Temangalo, CHOGM.

We have seen his flagship slogan “Go foward”. We would want him to table his balanced sheet.

30 years in government there is nothing new Amama Mbabazi is going to publish that Museveni hasn’t or any person in NRM.

He is going to fall in the same pit as Besigye, Mugisha Muntu. I think he is wasting his time.

We want to see the MPs that will join him, apart from his wife and sister in-law.

He has a right to stand, but has declared in a cowardly manner.

Ofwono Opondo, government spokesperson
