The ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM) says Amama Mbabazi is not only still their member but also a senior and credible leader.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson NRM Electoral Commission, emphasised this while appearing at NBS TV Morning Breeze show recently.
Discussing the NRM roadmap to 2016, Odoi said whatever is happening in NRM is a learning experience.
“We are learning to respect every office in its own capacity.”
He hinted on the current mess involving a voters’ register which Amama is accused of shelving and refusing to hand over as reflected in the Wakiso district Woman MP, Rosemary Seninde report.
He said NRM did not inherit any voters’ register as the secretariat and “we do not need any register now”.
He rushed to add that they were about to begin making the register afresh as announced by the party Secretary General, Kasule Lumumba, while addressing press at the party headquarters Kyadondo days ago.
A tweep put it to Odoi that “Amama is better than almost 98% of the NRM cabinet in terms of professionalism” but they had conspired to throw him out.
Amama lost two top seats last year in a space of months and was further isolated from top party organs leadership by NRM delegates.
He is anticipated to announce his bid to stand against Museveni in 2016 general elections.
Odoi, however, clarified that Amama was still their member.
“Hon Amama Mbabazi is a senior person of the NRM party and nobody has said the he is no longer a member of the party,” Odoi pointed out.
“If there are issues that Hon Amama got involved in, that does not stop him from being a senior and credible leader.”
He said NRM was a mass party where everyone is allowed to join.
As for the party chairman, President Yoweri Museveni’s involvement Amama’s sacking from the position of Secretary General, Odoi said “what people think of president Museveni is not 100% true”.
“The president only intervenes into things where necessary.”
Odoi used the opportunity to sound warning to party official who have started campaigns before the right time.
“All those who are complaining on NRM tickets in various areas before the official time stand warned.”
He also warned MPs who got to Parliament to earn a living instead of representing their people.
“Most of the people who go to parliament don’t want to represent people but money. They put money above everything else.”
