Former State minister for Information and Technology, Nyombi Thembo, says awarding MPs who served in past parliaments since independence has been long overdue.
He was speaking ahead of the Shs600m golden jubilee medal awards ceremony held at Kampala Serena hotel where over 1,000 legislators were decorated.
According to Nyombi who is also the ruling NRM party mobiliser, not everything that government does is a priority.
“There are things that governments must do,” he pointed out while appearing on NBS TV morning breeze Monday.
According to him, the Shs600m spent on medals for MPs shouldn’t alarm anybody.
“If a baptism function can cost you Shs100,000, what about this?”
Nyombi says being an MP is the 9th highest office in the land.
“They should have a vehicle worth that office. The public is entitled to react the way it is.”
He said, however, that parliament should come out and explain with humility.
On whether a medal means anything to him, Nyombi said: “Somehow. It will be a good thing for my grandchildren to look at.”
