Hon. George William Thembo Nyombi, the Minister of State for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) says tension in the ruling party is high over rivalry caused by the race for speaker.
“I don’t know why there should be any tension. NRM has always decided on who should be Speaker but I have never seen it this tense,” Nyombi said while appearing on NBS TV Monday.
The minister said the NRM electoral commission is not small and can handle the matter.
“The president of this country had to submit his papers to it [NRM EC],” Nyombi pointed out, adding that whoever becomes speaker will serve the purpose.
The tense race is between Rebecca Kadaga and her deputy Jacob Oulanyah.
The race for deputy speaker also has since attracted seven candidates with opposition saying it is ready to front its own candidate.
“I am indifferent on this. It would have been better if only one came out,” Nyombi said in reference to the Kadaga-Oulanyah contest.
The minister said NRM wants to win in the Speakership race.
“We are vetting so that we have a strong speaker just in case opposition fronts theirs.”
He said when the NRM Central Executive Committee [CEC] sitting at State House Entebbe today comes up with a name(s), that name will not be final.
There will be an election in Parliament.
