“We are waiting for the landslide victory on 18.02.2016,” Hon. Mike Sebalu, the spokesperson of the ruling National Resistance Movement [NRM] taskforce told press on Friday.
Speaking at Kati Kati Restaurant in Lugogo Kampala, Sebalu said the NRM Presidential candidate, Yoweri Museveni, has steadily progressed in his endeavour to renew the mandate with Ugandans as the president of Uganda for another 5 more years.
“We want to expressly thank him for being very consistent, and proving very fit for leadership, as he leads all other candidates competing against him in terms of resilience, articulacy in messaging, local appeal and connection to the ordinary Ugandan.”
He said the NRM candidate has so far covered 160 rallies, and 160 constituencies in 11 sub regions and 70 districts.
The president, Sebalu noted, has not been diverted by the side shows of other candidates who are trying to be diversionary and disruptive.
“We appreciate all our leaders in all sub regions for mobilising massively, and for constantly encouraging our supporters and members to attend these rallies,” he said.
Sebalu informed press that their candidate was enjoying very warm reception, mammoth crowds and overwhelming support with many high level defections from both FDC and Go Forward camps.
“Kanungu and Rukungiri were even more exciting given that these are back yards of KB [Kizza Besigye] and JPAM [Amama Mbabazi] respectively.”
“But as we count down to 18th, February 2016, we note with concern, that some candidates and their teams are becoming tensed up and very desperate, many sounding violence drums at the voting time and after; while others are making wild and provocative statements that are meant only to alarm the public.”
On behalf of NRM and Team Museveni, Sebalu appealed to all Ugandans to stick to their right to vote, and freedom to choose their own leadership as ably guaranteed under the constitution of Uganda.
“We therefore wish to resound the Prime Minister’s call for calm and that any pseudo Military and or gang groups formed by any person or team in this campaign should be disbanded.”
He said NRM party cherishes Peace in its totality, Freedom and people’s fundamental right to choose their own leaders and emphasising that this must be guarded jealously by all Ugandans.
“We eschew/Shun sectarianism in all its forms, and we believe in all inclusive Uganda, our different ethnic, religious, Gender, and political disparities being just celebrated as beauty of diversity.”
Appealing to all State institutions to do their work during this period; the Uganda Police, The Independent Electoral Commission, and all state agencies should be left to do their work without fear or favour, Sebalu said no candidate whatsoever should use his/her might to intimidate and or influence these institutions and individuals therein not to exercise their legal mandate.
“As NRM we only ask for the vigilance, fairness, and just execution of their duties to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election.”
Saying that other candidates were desperate already, Sebalu asked people “out there” to ask candidates Amama Mbabazi Kizza Besigye to vote “their favourite candidate Yoweri Museveni”.
“Do not be shy even to ask Amama Mbabazi and Kizza Besigye to vote for their favourable candidate YK Museveni.”
Besigye, the Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] flag bearer is running against Museveni for the fourth time [2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016].
Mbabazi, the former Prime Minister and NRM Secretary General, is running for president for the first time.
