NRM starts registering students as voters

The ruling party has embarked on a countrywide registration of students to prepare them for voting in 2016 general elections.

The revelation was made by NRM national treasurer, Rose Namayanja, while addressing press at NRM headquarters in Kyadondo on Thursday.

“We have organized grassroots meetings to clean the NRM registers,” she noted.

Namayanja said the NRM register has approximately 10 million members and this will be boosted by an additional batch of students across the country who are 18 years and above so they can also vote in next year’s elections.

Earlier, the party secretary general, Kasule Lumumba, informed party members and the entire public that the display of the members’ register starts today, Friday 21st August 2015 at their respective branches or villages.

The display is part of the electoral process aimed at enabling the party members check the accuracy of the particulars on the register.

during the exercise, the following categories of ineligible persons shall be removed from the register: those who have died since the time of registration, those who neither reside nor originate from the area, those under the age of 18 years and those appearing more than once on the register.

“Telephone numbers for those who did not provide them must be captured and names of members who had not earlier registered be included. This exercise shall last only one day,” Lumumba said.

Namayanja on the other hand says after the display, those who were not registered at the time of registration will be free to register if they are Bonafide NRM members of the village.


“We are going to have members of NRM converging for purposes of scrutinizing their particulars, correcting any grammatical errors or otherwise that may have been captured in the process.”

She said the display shall run for only one day (Friday) at the respective branch levels country wide.

The display exercise, according to Namayanja, shall be handled and or supervised by only the party registrars at the various levels including: District Registrars (overall supervisor of the exercise), Sub county Registrars and Branch /Village Registrars who shall be the Display Officers.
