The ruling party Central Executive Committee (CEC) has declared Rebecca Kadaga sole candidate in the race for speaker of 10th Parliament.
CEC sat at State House Entebbe on Tuesday evening to vet Kadaga and her deputy Jacob Oulanyah who were vying for the seat.
In the end, the ruling party’s top decision making organ then approved Kadaga as the NRM Candidate for Speaker.
This in essence leads her straight as the Speaker of the 10th Parliament if no other candidate in the opposition stands against her.
She will be ratified by the NRM Parliamentary Cacus before her name is forwarded to the Parliament on the 18/05/2016 for Confirmation by the Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Parliament who will be the Chief Justice.
NRM electoral commission chairman Tanga Odoi will now write to the Caucus chairperson cancelling the election for speaker earlier scheduled for Thursday.
Tanga will also advise the caucus chair not to bother organise elections for the position of speaker but for the deputy speaker, a position which CEC approved Oulanyah for.
Sources in Entebbe say Oulanyah accepted CEC decision and will run as deputy speaker, his original office.
The race now has eight candidates in all.
CEC has meanwhile suspended campaigns till Thursday when a formal communication will be made.
