The National Resistance Movement Electoral Commission says it is not aware of a resolution declaring President Museveni as the sole candidate in a race to determine who contests on behalf of the party in the 2016 presidential elections.
Tanga reportedly made declared the position while meeting the NRM Caucus to update it about the party’s election road map to 2016 general elections.
Odoi told the caucus that all elective positions were to be competed for including the NRM presidential flag bearer contrary to the caucus which fronted Museveni as the sole candidate for 2016.
According to Odoi, the Kyankwanzi resolution of 2014 on sole candidature could be a Caucus position but as the EC they are independent and ready to receive nomination forms from everyone interested in any position.
According to the NRM constitution, a presidential candidate is approved by the delegates’ conference on recommendation of the Central Executive Committee and National Delegates Conference.
The position declared by the Commission’s Chairperson, Odoi has however angered the party’s caucus in Parliament which allegedly fronted the sole candidate project.
Some Members of the caucus say the Commission as an organ of the party cannot disown the February 2014 Kyankwanzi resolutions that among other endorsed Museveni as a sole candidate to contest on behalf of the party in the next elections.
Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa, reportedly put it to Odoi that the NRM Caucus had passed a resolution to support President Museveni as their sole candidate for the positions of the presidency and the national chairman and nothing would change that.
Denis Obua, the NRM Caucus spokesperson, also told Daily Monitor, that the Caucus stands by its Kyankwanzi resolution of sole candidate (President Museveni) and will go ahead to endorse him in October this year.
