The ruling National Resistance Movement Central Executive Committee [CEC] is meeting this afternoon at State House Entebbe to vet candidates for the Parliament speaker and deputy speaker.
The race for speakership closed last Friday with two candidates vying for full speaker and seven more vying for deputy speakership.
NRM Electoral Commission Odoi Tanga said on Saturday he would submit the names of those interested in heading the 10th parliament to the ruling party’s top decision-making organ today.
Tanga said he was forced to ban media interviews and radio talk shows to avoid wrangling between the candidates.
After CEC has vetted the names and approved them, the candidates will then start giving out interviews and holding talk shows.
Today’s meeting will be chaired by the party chairman, Yoweri Museveni.
Kamuli Woman MP Rebecca Kadaga and her Deputy Jacob Oulanyah (Omoro County) are batting for the position of speaker.
Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo, Ndorwa West MP, David Bahati, Monicah Amoding, Joviah Kamateeka, Abbas Agaba and Denis Obua are battling for the position of deputy speaker.
CEC will knock off some of these names and then forward the rest to the Caucus which will vote the winner.
