NRM boss in prison for defilement

Arua high court Judge Justice Vincent Okwanga on Wednesday denied to grant bail to Dan Opima, the NRM registrar in the District.

Dan Opima is accused of defiling a 14 year-old girl of Arua demonstration Primary school.

The girl whose identity cannot be revealed is a daughter to the brother in-law of the accused.

Dan Opima who is said to be 59 years was arrested late last month and detained at Arua Central Police Station.

He is a former Ugandan ambassador to Belgium and Ethiopia.

He first appeared before chief magistrate court on July 30th and later remanded to Arua government prison into the case.

Jimmy Madira, the accused lawyer on Wednesday applied for bail on grounds that, he is old and had developed hypertension.

However, prosecution led by Ms Harriet Adubango said Opima should not be granted bail on grounds that he would interfere with investigations.

The Judge committed him to the High court on charges of aggravated defilement.
