Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has said his government is working on a new proposal to promote teachers who have never been to university but with proven ability to lead in primary schools to the position of head teacher.
According to Museveni, there are a number of competent teachers who can be promoted to headmaster but lack degrees.
“You now don’t need a university degree to become a primary school head teacher,” said Museveni during the celebrations of Teachers’ Day at Lugogo in Kampala yesterday.
Museveni also said his government is working on how to provide free accommodation to all government teachers.
“We want to stop inconveniencing you with these things of renting your own accommodation,” he added.
Museveni further revealed that he is to construct schools at every parish level.
The rejection of degrees for primary head teachers come on the heels of revelations that 80% of primary teachers do not understand mathematics concept.
