Members of Parliament have requested the Ministry of Finance for additional funding to the Ministry of Health to fight the Hepatitis B scourge that is affecting different parts of the country.
Hon. William Nzoghu (Busongora County North, Kasese) expressed concern about the outbreak of Hepatitis B citing lack of vaccines in the hospitals.
“People are suffering and the infections are spreading with others dying because there is no medication,” Hon. Nzoghu said.
The Chairperson of the Health and Mbarara Municipality MP, Hon. Medard Bitekyerezo said that the outbreak was an emergency that was resulting into so many deaths and it needed attention.
“The Ministry of Health should be provided with all the necessary funds to acquire the necessary vaccines and medicine,” Hon. Bitekyerezo said.
The Minister of State for Primary Healthcare, Hon. Sarah Opendi said the first batch of vaccines had been released to the hospitals but added funds were not enough to cover all the health units.
The Speaker, Rt.Hon. Rebecca Kadaga urged the Ministry of Finance to provide the necessary funding to curb the outbreak of Hepatitis B.
The Minister of Finance, Hon. Matia Kasaija promised to look for any funds available to handle the situation.
“We shall look for funds but in case we cannot, I will request Parliament to provide a supplementary budget for the vaccines and testing kits,” Kasaija said.
