National Water and Sewerage Corporation Managing Director, Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha, has dismissed allegations that water in Kampala is contaminated with human faeces.
Mugisha made the clarification during an online session running under the hashtag #AskNWSChosted by NBS television.
“I found National Water and Sewerage Corporation when it was present in 123 towns. Today, we are present in 167 towns & serve seven million,” he said.
On water prices, Mugisha said a 20 litre jerrycan of water at NWSC pump is Shs37.
“Which commodity in Uganda is that cheap? High water costs rest on those who sell water at own prices but at NWSC, 20 litre jerrycan costs Shs37.”
He said they were installing more public stand pipes to increase access to safe water and reduce influence of middlemen.
“We have a limited resource envelope which limits us in our ambition to reach more Ugandans.”
NWSC has a limited resource envelope, which limits the corporation in its ambition to reach more Ugandans, the MD confessed.
He also cited water theft saying it is on the increase not because water is expensive but because people are greedy.
“People who steal water don’t realise is that in the end, NWSC will have no money to extend very water they steal.”
On contamination, Mugisha noted: “It isn’t true that our water is contaminated with faeces.”
He quickly pointed out that none contamination doesn’t mean users should drink water without boiling it.
On disconnections, Mugisha said before the corporation disconnects anyone, they send out a notice, including SMS messages.
“Our debt age is two months which means some of our customers have debts of up to two months.“
Mugisha announced that pre-paid metres are now available but warned they are currently more expensive.
One meter costs about Shs3 million.
