Nine perish in Oyam district road accident


The victims are two female and two male juveniles from the same family, five women. Two adults are nursing injuries at Atapara Hospital.

The cause of the accident happened when the driver of a Fusso Lorry registration number UAK425G lost control and ran over some people who were selling merchandise on the roadside as he attempted to dodge two children who were crossing the road at Acokara Trading Centre, Otwal Sub-county in Oyam District.

Eight people died instantly, while three sustained serious injuries. One died on the way to Atapara Hospital, bringing the death toll to nine.

The dead have been identified as Sharon Akidi, Prossy Tino, Ivan Ojok and Ronnie Omara, all children from the same family, Ruth Okada, Josephine Akello, Esther Amuna, Geto Akao and Jenti Oca. Oca died on the way to Atapara Hospital. Those in critical condition at Atapara Hospital are Gloria Anyango and Joyce Ogole, all adults.

The police is still looking for the driver of the truck who still on the run. The angry residents turned their fury on the truck and burnt it.
