In Gulu district, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) partnered with various non government organisations to plant trees and clean up garbage.
Today was a pre-cursor to the World Environment Day (WED) which is to be celebrated in Uganda on Monday June 6th although the rest of the world will be celebrating WED on Sunday June 5th.
Little Green Hands and government officials from Gulu joined many other local people in town to do the cleaning up and tress planting.
Rivers and creeks were cleaned and cleared of brushes and garbage.
The exercise involved draining trenches, sweeping streets and picking up rubbish from the town.
The theme of this year’s WED celebrations is Go wild for life on World Environment Day!
Through awareness and education, a lot can be done to help the environment breathe.
School children are very good partners in environmental awareness and even just keeping their communities clean.
