Police in Luweero is holding a display officer of the national voters’ register after three registers went missing.
Eugene Erwaru, the acting Luweero District Police Commander- DPC identified the suspect as Shafik Kato, 25.
Kato’s arrest follows a complaint from the Electoral Commission officials in the district after the suspect failed to satisfactorily explain the whereabouts of three registers he was entrusted with.
He was employed as display officer for three polling stations in Nakadingidi zone.
The suspect narrates that every evening, after work, he would return the registers to his house and go attend to his shop in Wobulenzi town.
The Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department -CIID Officer Raymond Jaggwe, says they are investigating the matter and only after investigations will police prefer a case against the display officer.
This comes at a time the Electoral Commission is announcing the closure of the display exercise.
In parallel announcements, both by the Electoral Commission chairman, Badru Kiggundu, and the EC spokesperson, Jotham Taremwa, confirmed Tuesday as the closing date for the display of the register.
The exercise commenced last month.
“Display of National voters’ register ends today. We are calling upon voters to verify their particulars on register,” Taremwa said earlier today in a social media message.
