Muteesa I Royal University closed after strike


Following a students strike that left the Vice Chancellor’s office among other property vandalised at Muteesa I Royal University Main Campus, the institution has been closed.

The university was closed yesterday and all the students sent home till further notice.

The angry students, who were holding placards denouncing their vice chancellor Prof. Arthur Sserwanga, first stormed the university staff lounge and interrupted the university council meeting which was in progress, accusing the VC of running down the institution.

Maxwell Ogwal, the Southern Regional Police Commander said police was deployed in time to calm the situation and ensure the safe departure of the students.

Students through their Guild President , Jessy Lumu Serunkuuma have for a very long time been complaining about key university administrators who chose to sit at the university branch in Mengo-Kakeeka, Kampala yet the main campus is in Masaka.

The 595 students at Masaka campus also complain about poor feeding , bad learning environment ,unpaid teaching staff and unreasonable suspension and expulsion of some staff from this privately owned institution founded by Buganda Kingdom.

The university council was reportedly supposed to convene yesterday to discuss students concerns among other issues.
