President Yoweri Museveni yesterday passed out 28,000 crime preventers from Lango sub-region during the ceremony held at Lira Golf Course ground.
At least 200,000 crime preventers have been trained in Lango Sub-Region in Northern Uganda, according to State House.
Speaking at the function, Museveni told crime preventers that he has no money to pay them salaries.
He quickly pointed out:”…but we shall give them projects like a maize mill in every sub-county and also adding value to sim-sim instead of exporting them raw to Sudan”.
According to the police chief, Kale Kayihura, the crime preventers are a reserve force for fighting crime.
According to The Independent magazine CEO, Andrew Mwenda, crime preventers as Kayihura’s “brilliant idea to use police resources to mobilize for President Museveni and destabilize the opposition”.
The Observer quotes Reagan Okumu, an FDC Member of Parliament for Aswa county, telling parliament that crime preventers were campaigning for NRM and intimidating supporters of other parties.
Blaize Kamugisha, the national coordinator of crime preventers, was previously NRM chairman of Makerere University.
Most of them are always passed out wearing Museveni T-shirts.
According to Observer, Museveni will kick-start the 2016 race for president Museveni with at least 1.7 million mobilisers or votes or both [crime preventers].
This is also supplemented by other militia groups for example that of Maj Roland Kakooza Mutale which he has been training in Luweero jungles.
Opposition accuses Museveni of panning a “Rwanda style genocide” through arming youth including primary kids.
