The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mike Chibita has recalled Christopher Aine’s files, according to police spokesperson Enanga.
Aine was a bodyguard for former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi during 2016 election campaigns before disappearing in December last year.
He only resurfaced recently at Gen Salim Saleh’s home claiming he was hiding in Tanzania all along.
Last week, the Police Chief, Kale Kayihura sought consultations from Attorney General (AG) over Aine’s issues given the nature of the matter.
“We held consultations since Aine’s case was political in nature to get guidance and needed to be handled carefully. Now the DPP has recalled the files for more advise and guidance,” he said.
This came after Saleh refused to hand over Aine for prosecution.
Jinja Chief Magistrate’s Court has already issued a warrant of arrest for Aine on two charges of assaulting police officers on duty.
The Observer reports that President Yoweri Museveni has too picked interest in the return of Aine and demanded to meet him since the ruling NRM is the biggest complainant in at least one of the two cases against him.
Apart from assaulting Edgar Nyabongo, the regional police commander of Kiira, in Jinja, Aine was also part of the Go Forward supporters who beat up Museveni supporters in Ntungamo last year.
Therefore, the president reportedly wants to hear Aine’s side before he decides whether to pardon him.
Having surrendered himself, the state has the right to pardon Aine or continue with the trial.
