While the former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, continues to dominate news and social media platforms, President Yoweri Museveni is not idle either.
The latest we have from State House indicates that Museveni has now employed a former senior but retired spy, Brig Henry Tumukunde, to infiltrate and neutralise Mbabazi camp.
The fall out with Museveni
The former Chief of Military Intelligence, Commanding Officer of The UPDF Fourth Division, based in Gulu, Northern Uganda and Director General of The Internal Security Organisation, ISO, fell out with Museveni in 2003.
At a political retreat in 2003, Tumukunde, in the presence of the President and his Cabinet, argued against the impending removal of term limits that would give President Museveni the right to stand for re-election on an infinite basis.
Tumukunde was on 28 May 2005, forced to resign from Parliament and subsequently arrested on the orders of the President.
His home was surrounded by no less than 50 soldiers commanded by General’s Kayihura and Masaba who proceeded to arrest him.
He was charged with the offences of abuse of office and spreading harmful propaganda and incarcerated for nearly 2 years.
His subsequent court martial hearings backfired leading to his release in 2007.
Tumukunde back in Museveni favour
We are told of a State House reconciliation between Museveni and the former spy (no detailed explanation of the reunion).
However, we know that currently, Tumukunde is at the centre of Museveni’s media team that is instructed to destroy Mbabazi’s networks ahead of 2016.
The brigadier has been busy meeting journalists in Kampala and seeking ways of breaking Mbabazi’s dominance of daily news.
Some journalists told The Observer that Tumukunde asked them to help him “spy on the opposition and furnish him with regular reports”.
Tumukunde reportedly said journalists working under him must be ready to work till late.
The journalists were instructed to traverse the country to mobilize their rural colleagues to promote Museveni’s re-election bid.
The huge team includes; Simon Kaheru, the new Consultant of NRM for communication, Don Wanyama, former Daily Monitor managing editor and Museveni’s Special Media Assistant, the NRM Secretariat and minister for Presidency, Frank Tumwebaze,
Its mission is to discredit Mbabazi ahead of 2016 who they claim is the social media critic, Tom Voltaire Okwalinga.
They will be sharing information on emails and by dropbox to neutralise Amama.
Brigadier Henry Tumukunde is a senior military officer of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces.
A former bush war hero, Tumukunde is a qualified lawyer and former UPDF’s Chief of Personnel and Administration.
Tumukunde was also an MP representing the Army in the Parliament of Uganda between 1995 and 2005.
