President Museveni presented a paper on geopolitics at the ongoing Leadership Retreat at the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi on Wednesday.
President Museveni said, “Geopolitics of the region concerns principle number two – Pan Africanism. In order to guarantee our prosperity we need the region of East and Central Africa. That is why we need the East African Community. However, you can’t integrate with everybody aimlessly.”
He added that it is what brings in compatibility and geopolitics should be shaped by these legitimate interests.
“Even before the Europeans came we were trading with (people of) the EAC coast we were getting textiles, copper from Congo. This interdependence is not new at all it was there it had been interfered with by the colonialists.”
He added: “As you have seen we have been slowly reassembling these partitions. As you can see Rwanda is a member of the East African Community, Burundi is a member of the East African Community, South Sudan is a member of the East African Community.”
“When we are provoked by some actors who don’t know what they are doing we should ignore them,” Museveni said.
According to him, the Nile, again this issue should not be a source of conflict hence Uganda should engage Egypt.
“The problem of the Nile is cutting off of trees from the tropics – electrification and industrialization that is the way to protect the Nile.”
He said attitudes towards neighbours should be to show them common interests; prosperity, identity, security.
