President Yoweri Museveni has called on local leaders to promote commercial agro-production for food security and incomes saying people need to know what to do to transform their lives.
The President said people in the rural areas with land are much better than those in the urban areas and that they need to be encouraged to engage in profitable enterprises such as coffee and fruits for those with little land acreage or maize for those with large land acreage.
“It is so bad if families have no incomes. Poor families can be vulnerable. If you preach morality in Church without addressing the material needs of the people, Satan can take them,” he said.
The President was over the weekend addressing the political and opinion leaders of Kyenjojo district who included the LC 3 Chairpersons, veterans and youth leaders among others at the Tooro Royal Cottages Ltd.
He urged the leaders of Kyenjojo District to lead without practicing sectarianism and instead work and live in unity.
The President directed the Minister of Local Government Adolf Mwesige to meet the district leaders and find a lasting solution to the misunderstandings over the boundaries between Mwenge North and the new Mwenge Central Constituency.
President Museveni said that the important factors are wealth creation, skills development, infrastructure development with particular reference to roads and peace and security.
He said that jobs were mainly based on agricultural production and the development of skills. He urged the leaders to encourage enterprise selection and mix to generate household income.
The President said the NRM Government deployed UPDF Officers with the task of promoting household income and that it was unfortunate for people to own land and remain poor.
He revealed that the Government would provide more funds to promote the distribution of seeds and breeding materials.
The President warned against land fragmentation upon the death of family heads and strongly advised the people to establish companies and register all their pieces of land and property with the aim of sharing from the profits accrued.
He assured them that the murram roads would be worked on in all districts as soon as the Government acquires more road construction equipment.
The Minister of State for Privatization Aston Kajara who is also the area Member of Parliament requested for additional funds for the construction of bridges in Kyenjojo District.
