At least 23,000 crime preventers have been passed out, to help police fight crime at the villages.
President Yoweri Museveni presided over the passing out of crime preventers trained by the Uganda Police at Nyakasanga grounds in Kasese District.
They have been undergoing basic training on how to support police and other authorities in fighting simple community crimes.
Presiding over the function at Nyakasanga playground, president Museveni further commended the crime preventers’ concept.
Museveni asked them to be good examples to the public.
The president says the best way to fight crime is to embrace wealth creation.
He says these should focus on fighting murder, theft and promoting commercialization of agriculture.
Museveni also thanked Uganda Police for the noble job done.
“The role of the police is to promote community policing and the role of crime preventers is to stop petty crimes of stealing chicken, coffee and more,” he said.
He added: “Thanks to the Uganda Police for supporting Government to fight poverty.”
