Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has revealed that Oyam County South Member of parliament, Betty Amongi’s education fees was paid by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat chaired by president Yoweri Museveni.
Among, who is a Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) member and wife to Jimmy Akena the UPC president was last week appointed state minister for lands designate.
“So far, we have not had any appointee declining their post,” said Opondo.
According to the government spokesperson, Museveni has a tendency for working with people on the opposing side.
He listed the several members of opposition who have worked with Museveni before and among them included UPC’s Aggrey Awori and Democratic Party’s (DP’s) Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere.
Opondo said upon completion of her university education, Amongi surprisingly crossed over to UPC party.
“Notwithstanding, Amongi’s education sponsorship didn’t bind her to the ruling NRM although some people were surprised that she joined UPC,” he said.
Early this week, DP President Norbert Mao said appointing three Opposition members to Cabinet does not make Museveni’s government broad based.
Mao said that the Opposition had called for a government of national unity, built on consensus, following the disputed February 18 general election.
