President Yoweri Museveni has been recognised as a dynamic leader by Africa Masahariki Fest for his outstanding performance in promoting the integration of the East African Community.
In a function that was part of the Africa Mashariki Fest activities that included marathon in Kampala, President Museveni was recognised along others including former Presidents, Daniel Arap Moi of Kenya and Benjamin Mkapa of Tanzania, respectively.
In a speech read for him by Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi during the inaugural awards at Speke Resort Munyonyo, under the theme tracing and trekking the footsteps of the founding fathers- walking the talk, the President observed that NRM administration has been at the forefront of promoting regional integration as a crucial foundation for sustainable development.
Museveni said that the cardinal responsibility and duty of East Africans is to promote awareness about the East African Community integration process, foster cohesion and togetherness to promote cross border trade and tourism adding that that unity particularly in the current global context is the only way the region can protect its people and guarantee the future of their nations.
He said that the youth must be guided and equipped to understand the value of working collectively to avoid the fate of forefathers who were ravaged by slave trade, colonialism and neo-colonialism.
He urged the people of East Africa to ignore petty divisions created by artificial borders that he called barriers to faster social transformation adding that all people in the region have a common ancestry, heritage and origin.
