President Yoweri Museveni has today installed Prof. Mondo Kagonyera as the First Chancellor of Kabale University at Kikungiri in Kabale Municipality.
The president also presided over Kabale University’s graduation ceremony.
In his remarks, the President said that Universities should know that people want education that will help them get employed.
An education system that does not produce for the job market is not helpful.
“I am therefore happy to learn that Kabale University is putting emphasis on job market oriented courses,” said the President
He urged the university to reduce recurrent expenditure and spend more on infrastructure.
The President observed that Kabale University is located in a cool, quiet environment.
This is conducive for study and research, and therefore asked the stakeholders not to contaminate it with strikes and other things.
He congratulated Prof Kagonyera upon installation as chancellor saying that he trusts he will do a good job.
He also congratulated those who have graduated.
Museveni appointed Prof Mondo Kagonyera as the Chancellor of Kabale University in March 2016.
Kabale University Council chaired by former privatization Minister Mr Manzi Tumubwine early this year seconded Prof Kagonyera because of his wide knowledge in handling university matters.
He served as Chancellor Makerere University for eight years before being replaced by former finance minister Ezra Suruma.
The vice chancellor Prof Joy Kwesiga said they have started organizing for his installation.
The university was started in 2002 by a group of individuals including retired Justice Prof George Kanyeihamba, Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, and director National Teachers College Benjamin Turyahikayo.
Kabale District Local Government donated 52 acres of land and all the buildings housing the university.
Prof. Kanyeihamba has been the chancellor of Kabale University since its inception.
It was gazzeted a public university in 2015 on request of local leadership and founders.
