President Yoweri Museveni is expected in Rukungiri this afternoon to bury the Internal Affairs minister, Gen Aronda Nyakairima.
The presidential press secretary, Lindah Nabusayi, tells The Insider the president left for Rukungiri soon after visiting NRM party offices at Kyadondo in Kampala.
The president was duly nominated by NRM Electoral Commission chairman, Tanga Odoi, Sunday morning as the party’s presidential flag bearer after being approved by the Central Executive Committee [CEC].
Lindah says he may arrive in Rukungiri town in 30 minutes from now.
The body the former army commander arrived in his home district on Saturday afternoon.
Army spokesman, Lt Col Paddy Ankunda, said thousands of people gathered at Aronda’s home in Nyakiju to offer prayers so his soul can rest in eternal peace.
Gen. Aronda, who died in flight from South Korea to Dubai on Saturday, was brought home on Wednesday and lay in state at Parliament on Thursday where MPs paid him tribute.
On Friday, the body was taken to Kololo Independence Grounds for a church service.
On Saturday, the body has been flown to his ancestral home in Rukingiri for burial.
Aronda’s remains will be laid to rest today, Sunday and President Yoweri Museveni will be the chief mourner.
The General will be buried with full military honours and a 17-gun salute.
