President Museveni has launched the Professor Emmanuel Mutebile Chair in monetary policy, banking and finance in Makerere University.
He also launched the Mutebile Centre of Excellence and private sector development.
This initiative to immortalize Professor Mutebile through this endowed Chair and Centre of Excellence was spear headed by Makerere University Council and Management.
The idea was conceived in 2007 and established under the Makerere University Private Sector Forum to attract funding to the University.
Museveni, who was represented at the launch by the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, paid glowing tribute to Prof. Emmanuel Mutebile for his commitment to national economic growth and development.
“This has not only blessed Uganda but also East Africa and beyond. I cannot think of any more deserving recipient of this award other than Prof. Mutebile,” he said.
The President noted that by addressing Monetary Policy, Banking and Finance, Makerere will be tackling the key drivers of the country’s socio-economic transformation.
“Makerere should have done such wonderful innovations yesterday to complement government efforts in this direction,” he said.
He said Professor Mutebile Center of Excellence for private sector development, was another remarkable achievement of the University.
The Centre will establish an information base and advisory services for the private sector growth.
As engines of economic development, the private sector needs appropriate information, innovation and technology for value addition and to enhance their businesses.
“I am happy that the Mutebile Centre is going to address these pertinent issues for the private sector,” he said.
Professor Mutebile who is also the Governor Bank of Uganda, thanked Makerere University and the private sector for conceiving the idea of Mutebile Chair and Centre of Excellence.
He applauded Makerere for the academic advancement inspite of the financial challenges.
Mutebile has a rich history of providing exceptional service in implementing government policies that have stabilized the economy.
He has been voted as one of the best three Central Bank Governors in Africa.
The function was also attended by former Vice-Chancellors of Makerere University, members of the academic staff and some members of the Mutebile family.
