President Yoweri Museveni has said that the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) has a history of patriotism and heroism and urged those joining the force to take advantage and learn from its great history so that their success in the military, social and political life is guaranteed.

The President who is also the Commander-In-Chief of the Uganda Armed Forces was yesterday speaking shortly after passing out 2,900 UPDF recruits who successfully completed a nine month basic army training course at the Army training school Kaweweta, in Nakaseke district.

President Museveni told the recruits, that they are now part of a force of patriots and heroes and that they have great potential and a bright future ahead of them.

“The UPDF is a serious institution, what we don’t want is impatience. For us we are patient. For example, we have for a long time, stayed in grass thatched huts but gone on to serve our country until we got better,” he said.

He urged other servants to learn from the army’s experience of ‘using what is at our disposal today but continue to serve our country’.

The President congratulated the UPDF leadership upon the great levels of excellence they have attained in training the force.

“Your training has greatly improved and I want to congratulate the trainers, instructors and the army leadership. I got a problem while training recruits during the 1981-1986 liberation war in this area. I was accused by parents of harassing their children but had to explain that training a soldier required going through strong army drills and they understood and supported our movement,” he said.

The Commander-in Chief also congratulated the army leadership for the success they have attained in solving the housing and accommodation issue in the force.

The President who earlier inspected newly constructed accommodation and office blocks at the army institute said that provision of decent accommodation and working stations in the Army is part of the UPDF modernization and professionalization agenda.

He pledged governments’ support towards availing funds for this cause.

The President used the occasion to send a strong warning to political leaders who use sectarian language to gain political support in the upcoming election saying this was criminal.

He instructed Resident District Commissioners to arrest any body found to be involved in sectarian politics and ensure that they are charged in accordance with the law and even have their election cancelled.

“The National Resistance Movement stands for the unity of Uganda and the unity of Africa and that has been her source of strength. Anyone who practices sectarianism is your enemy, the enemy of Uganda, Africa and the Movement,” he said.

The Chief of defense Forces General Edward Katumba Wamala told the new recruits that their success in the Uganda People’s Defense Forces will depend on their discipline, hard work and their positive attitude towards work and life.

He assured Ugandans that the UPDF was ready to safeguard the prevailing peace and security in the country jealously and asked the citizens to support them in this endeavor.
