After back to back negotiations with the organisers for the second presidential debate, president Museveni’s end has confirmed their candidate will attend the debate scheduled today at Serena Kampala.
The ruling National Resistance Movement had earlier forwarded a number of conditions as pre-requisite for their candidate attending the debate. The party demanded that renowned critic of president Museveni and veteran journalist Mr Shaka Ssali be withdrawn from the moderation panel. The party also demanded that all media house be allowed to air the debate and not only NTV and all the 1500 guest be screened by security.
By yesterday evening, the two sides had not agreed, former high court judge James Ogoola said the matter remained a sticky issue but they were still pushing for a common ground.
However, this morning the statehouse Uganda confirmed the president will be attending the debate in a post on their official Facebook page.
“President Museveni will be at the second #UGDebate16 later this evening at Serena Hotel.”
Mr Museveni has previously likened the debate to a high school activity.
