President Yoweri Museveni’s government has bought vehicles for former vice presidents and prime ministers including Prof Gilbert Bukenya and Amama Mbabazi who were dropped by Mr Museveni in 2011 and 2014 respectively.
Mbabazi ran as an independent presidential candidate in the February 18 poll.
The new Toyota Land Cruisers for Mbabazi, Bukenya, Dr Specioza Wandira Kazibwe, also former Vice President, Apolo Nsibambi and Kintu Musoke (former prime ministers) were purchased from Toyota Uganda at a whopping sum of about Shs1 billion.
Each cost about Shs240 million.
The vehicles bearing government registration number plates belong to the state.
Upon demise of the recipient, the vehicles are supposed to be returned to the government.
The emoluments and Benefits of the Presidents, Vice President and Prime Minister Act, 2010, accords the three categories of Very Important Persons (VIPs) a number of benefits including a vehicle, house, monthly pension, medical insurance, fuel, security, utilities, secretaries, domestic servants and furniture.
