Electoral comission chairman Dr Badru Kiggundu was among the 561 individuals who were awarded with medals during the Independence Day fete in Luuka District on Sunday.
According to president Museveni, the award to Dr Kiggundu whose integrity in organising elections in the country has been questioned especially by government critics, is in appreciation for his contributions towards the Independence struggle of Uganda.
Dr Kiggundu was awarded with the golden Jubilee medal.
General Elly Tumwiine, the National Honours and Awards Committee chairperson, said the awards are meant to “recognise and reward outstanding acts and achievements of individuals who distinguished themselves in service to the nation.”
Several senior political figures, civil servants, footballers from the national team Uganda Cranes, civilians and other members of the public have been awarded the Uganda Independence Medal.
The 1978 Uganda Cranes team have been honoured with Golden Jubilee medals as a token of appreciation for taking Uganda to the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
