President Museveni has attended a working breakfast between African leaders and the Chinese leader at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The President stated that Uganda’s urgent need is the Standard Gauge Railway.
Your Excellency Xi Jinping,Your Excellency Jacob Zuma, Excellences, Colleagues from Africa, I greet all of you.
I want to salute the President of the People’s Republic of China for the support China is currently giving to Uganda in building two hydro-power dams, in constructing the Kampala-Entebbe Express-way and in modernizing the Entebbe Airport.
The Huawei Corporation helped us with the ICT backbone, obviously with the support of the Chinese Government.
The two hydro-power dams will yield 600 MW at Karuma and 183 MW at Isimba.
The Uganda Government has also given quite a number of Chinese road construction companies, road building contracts for which the Uganda Government pays.
That partnership will continue.
Our urgent need that we would like the Chinese Government to look at is the building of the regional Standard Gauge Railway that will link Uganda with Kenya at Malaba, Rwanda at Mirama Hills, South Sudan at Nimule and the Democratic Republic of Congo at Aruu.
This will have the total length of 3000 kilometres.
It will, however, be built in phases, starting with the Kampala-Malaba part of 273 kilometres.
The Uganda Government has already signed contracts with a Chinese company known as China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. (CHEC).
The project is just waiting for funding from Chinese financing agencies.
I thank Your Excellency Xi Jinping and the brother Excellences from Africa.
