Morrison Rwakakamba, Special Presidential Assistant – Research and Information, has called for the release of Robert Shaka, an information and security consultant who is currently under detention.
Shaka aka Maverick Blutaski was arrested on Monday morning and detained at Standard Investigations Unit (SIU) headquarters Kireka.
Police suspects that he is the popular social media critic, Tom Voltaire Okwalinga aka TVO.
Many Ugandans are currently engaging government on social media calling for the release of Shaka.
“From 15000 miles away here in the United States, I read that One of Uganda’s prolific social media activists Maverick Blutaski was arrested! That he is TVO!,” Rwakakamba wrote on his Facebook page.
“You see, NRM strength/ power is anchored on and derived from persuasion and engagement (siyasa) rather than coercion and intimidation.”
He said those who seek to settle scores through coercion and projection of hard power hurt NRM and its core values and should be investigated.
“They are enemies within. I for example don’t agree with most of Shaka’s diatribes – but I always engage and challenge him.”
He added: “We must allow flowers of ideas to blossom. That’s how resilient democracies are built and enduring transformation is achieved. NRM is not scared of alternative views. Let Shaka free. Engage and challenge him.”
TVO spits more fire
Meanwhile, TVO on whose account Shaka is languishing in jail, continues to spit fire condemning government for the act.
Last evening, TVO accused another social media activist, Justus Amanya, of causing Shaka’s arrest.
In response, Amanya denied the charge saying he had nothing to benefit from such an arrest by a government he, himself is opposed to.
TVO further wrote saying State House had ordered the arrest, adding that police and Special Forces Command are trying to “account for all the millions that have been wasted in the futile effort to catch me”.
Shaka’s lawyer speaks
Shaka’s lawyer, Nicholas Opio, has confirmed in a Facebook comment that his client has indeed been indicted and is accused of being TVO.
“He spends the night in detention but doing all I can to get him released. Funny thing is that when the police drew the indictment claiming Shaka is also TVO, TVO was busy posting urging the release of Shaka. They were quite embarrassed.”
He has promised to address press on the matter.
