Alioni Odria, the Independent MP for Yumbe, has denied accusations of extortion labeled against him, and asked the Speaker of Parliament to institute an investigation into the allegations.
In a personal statement to Parliament, Hon. Odria said the allegations are intended to intimidate him and other legislators into not following up issues of lack of accountability and misuse or mismanagement of public funds raised by the Auditor General.
“It is not true that I have been suspended by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). To the contrary, I have participated in the Public Accounts Committee meetings including that of today,” said Hon. Odria during Tuesday’s 22 November 2016 plenary sitting.
He said that the allegations were meant to tarnish his image and prevent the PAC from properly carrying out its duties.
Daily Monitor today reported that Parliament’s PAC had suspended MP Alioni Odria for soliciting a bribe from an unnamed Accounting Officer due to appear before the Committee.
PAC scrutinizes reports of the Auditor General relating to Central Government expenditure.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, said Parliament would wait and debate the PAC report. She also said she would give her ruling on the issue in due course.
