MP Fredrick Mbaghadi Nkayi was on Wednesday arrested by court bailiffs for failing to pay a Shs 41m debt.
Nkayi represents Kagoma County found in Jinja district.
According to New Vision, Jinja High Court assistant registrar issued an arrest warrant for Nkayi following a suit by Sarah Walube a.k.a Green Summer Enterprises, a construction materials dealer.
Walube says Nkayi borrowed bags of cement worth Shs 51m in February 2014.
He managed to pay back Shs 29m remaining with a balance of Shs 22m which has since accumulated to Shs 41m.
On Wednesday, as the legislator left the comfort of Source of the Nile Hotel in Jinja, court bailiff Henry Mukula of Harris Auctioneers and Court Bailiffs grabbed him.
The newspaper reports a scuffle ensuing as Nkayi’s supporters tried to block the court bailiffs from arresting the MP to no avail.
Nkayi was taken to Okalang Law Chambers along Gokhale road from where he was picked by police led by Officer in Charge of Operations at Jinja Central Police Station, Kefa Mutungha, and taken to Jinja High Court.
The Jinja High Court assistant registrar, Susan Kanyange, advised Nkayi to negotiate with the bailiffs.
Nkayi managed to raise Shs 18m from his friends and was released on aoth that he will pay the rest on October 22.
