Gerald Karuhanga, the Western Youth MP is challenging the election of Dr Tanga Odoi as the Makerere University Convocation chairman and ten others citing electoral malpractices including creation of ghost voters and polling stations.
Karuhanga contested for the post of Makerere University convocation chairperson on Thursday last week but lost to Odoi.
Makerere University Convocation is an association of graduates and staff; created by Section 70 (1) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and regulated by the Convocation Constitution.
In his petition to Kampala High court, Karuhanga faults Alfred Namoah Masikye, the Makerere University Academic Registrar for denying candidates a chance to campaign, canvass and address their voters saying he had organized a speech of his life.
He claims that, the omission by the academic registrar disadvantage them.
Other candidates have also gone to court.
They include Chris Niwandinda, Anna Adeke Ebaju, Alex Luganda, Julius Mutabazzi, Joshua Rukundo and Gideon Aturinda.
They also accuse Alfred Namoah Masikye, the Makerere University Academic Registrar for releasing the elections guidelines late, which made it impossible for them to scrutinize eligible voters.
“The academic registrar failed and/or refused to release the requisite electoral roll for the convocation elections, and thus denied the applicants the chance to scrutinize and clean the voters’ register in advance by causing the removal of imposters,” read the court papers in part.
It adds that, “In lieu of the requisite electoral roll, the academic registrar released at the eleventh hour a naked list of names of alleged graduates and university staff whose particulars such as course studied, year of graduation, employment position, etc were not specified.”
Through their lawyers, Center for Legal Aid, the aggrieved candidates want court to nullify the 2015/19 Makerere University convocation election results and order for fresh elections.
They also want court to direct the academic registrar to organize fresh elections for the 2015/19 Makerere University Convocation Executive in conformity with the Convocation Constitution and the laws of Uganda.
Court is yet to summon Dr Odoi, Makerere University and the ten executive members of convocation to file in their defense before a hearing date can be set.
