Ofwono Opondo, the Government Spokesperson has dismissed as hearsay talk that the ministers who have been meeting at Kyankwanzi discussed the lifting of presidential age limit.
“Kyankwanzi retreat discussed poor working relationships i.e. poor coordination between some ministers and state ministers,” he said while appearing on NBS TV morning breeze Monday.
He said the Kyankwanzi retreat brought together ministers and their permanent secretaries to discuss ways forward on efficiency.
“This time around, there was no discussion on the person of Mr. Museveni or the age limit,” he clarified.
He revealed that during the Kyankwanzi retreat, the president did not meet any agitators of lifting the age limit dismissing the talk as “rumours”.
Opondo said the Kyankwanzi Woman MP who wants age limit lifted wanted to come for the retreat but wasn’t allowed.
Before the retreat MP Anne Maria Nankabirwa, who doubles as the Kyakwanzi district NRM chairperson said their goal is to ensure parliament lifts the Presidential age limit from the current 75 years to none.
Article 102 (b) of the constitution provides that a person is not qualified for election as president unless that person is not less than 35 years and not more than 75 years of age.
Nankabirwa said the NRM leaders in Kyankwanzi want the age limit requirement lifted, to allow capable leaders such as President Yoweri Museveni continue with leadership.
“Kyankwanzi retreat didn’t focus on the superfluous redundant talk on lifting the presidential age limit,” Opondo continued before losing his temper.
“I will not entertain these foolish questions from the host. Issue of lifting age limit wasn’t discussed in Kyankwanzi. Unless you are stupid, I have said it before and I will say it again, lifting age limit never came up in Kyankwanzi,” said Opondo.
Opondo said government cannot stop any Ugandan from discussing whatever issue, including the age limit.
“NRM has not officially taken the proposal on lifting the age limit into consideration, at least for now.”
